Mar 30, 2007: A New Season Blooms

March 30, 2007—We are pleased to announce continuation of The Flea Market at Eastern Market in Washington, DC, on Sundays.
Tom Rall, manager of the Flea Market at Eastern Market notes “2007 marks our 24th season at the historic market and our 15th season at nearby Hine Junior High School. We accommodate 175 exhibitors each week”.
Contributing to the continuation of more than a century of curbside selling outside Eastern Market, the flea market is held every Sunday. The flea market is located along 7th Street between Pennsylvania and N. Carolina Avenues SE, on Capitol Hill. The Eastern Market Subway Station, on the Metro Orange and Blue Lines, is at 7th & Pennsylvania. The location is enhanced by a fine urban neighborhood. “It is a fun place to sell and shop," Rall noted.

As reported in our July 2006 newsletter, The Travel Channel visited the Flea Market at Eastern Market to record a segment about Washington DC for its new show, "Not Your Average Travel Guide".

The show is now running and the Washington DC program has recently been airing. "Not Your Average Travel Guide" is a series that offers an accessible approach to travel and an unconventional tour of the world. Included in this unique guide are travel tips to the main attractions as well as to the road less traveled.

The DC show features a wonderful "road-less- traveled" segment on Eastern Market, capturing it on a beautiful, bountiful and busy summer Sunday. Guide Bill Delano interviews long time exhibitor Mike Berman, communications director for The Flea Market at Eastern Market.

"The most interesting thing about the market is its diversity; you have the whole world here," Berman said. "It's really a unique experience and it happens every weekend year round." Travel Channel's Not Your Average Travel Guide

Congressman Reuben Hinojosa (D-Texas) led constituents from the Delta Region Revitalization Corporation on a tour of The Flea Market at Eastern Market on a recent Sunday. The group wants to start a market similar to Eastern Market in their rural area of Southern Texas. Congressman Hinojosa, Board Chairman Dr. Richard Gonzales and Board Member Michael Trippel interviewed and toured the Market with Tom Rall.

"We concentrated our conversations on the economic benefits of markets to communities," Rall said, "and covered such areas as incubation of businesses, provision of social services such as supplemental income for retirees, and the mixture of exhibitors with food providers in both indoor and outdoor settings. We discussed dozens of topics vital to the success of markets in general and Eastern Market in specific."
