Apr 2, 2012: Discoveries at The Flea Market

The Flea Market at Eastern Market will be "one of only 20 Fleas across America that will be included" in a website slideshow called "America's Best Flea Markets," Samantha Colt, assistant photo editor for American Express Publishing, wrote recently from her New York City office.

The company publishes "Food & Wine" and "Travel+Leisure" magazines among other upscale publications, including "Executive Travel" and "Departures." Colt's email requested images from our web site, EasternMarket.net, and our permission "to use this image again in other slideshows of our publications."

"Of course we responded affirmatively immediately," said Michael Berman, president of Diverse Markets Management (DMM) and manager of the popular Capitol Hill flea market, Sundays, at 7th & C Streets SE. "It's always a pleasure to have our hard work of many years recognized."

The flea market recently began its 29th year outside Eastern Market and 20th anniversary season at its present Hine School location. "We're fortunate to get requests for what amounts to free advertising," Berman continued. "Just a few days ago, Heather Perry, Creative Media Editor at wcities wrote from San Francisco asking us for photos for a new marketing initiative for Renaissance Hotels, one of its clients."

Called "Discoveries" Perry described the project as selecting "unusual and unique experiences" to suggest to "patrons of the Renaissance Washington DC Downtown Hotel."

If you can't make it out to the flea market this Sunday, you can also find several of our exhibitors at The Very Cherry Marketplace at the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival on Saturday, April 7.

The market, located next to the Kastles tennis stadium on Water Street between 7th & 9th Streets SW, will be part of seven celebratory hours of free music, water-related activities, and cultural experiences; including DC's best food trucks and a beer garden; four performance areas featuring live entertainment concluding with a Fireworks Spectacular over the historic Washington Channel.

The festival and marketplace will both open at 1 p.m. with the fireworks from Nagaoka City, Japan, expected to conclude the event beginning at 8:30 p.m.

Flea Market at Eastern Market exhibitors who can be found within distinctive high-peak tents at the marketplace include Jean-Louis Monfraix Photography, Sola Ope, Scarvelous; Carolina Lara, Amano Designs; Jennifer Lavallee, Bellajenna; Michael Rhine, Booda Boutique; Alexsandra Rodriguez, Inka Treasure Shop; Aashumi Shah, mirasa design; Jade Spradley, Yummi Bebe; Katrina Ulrich, Red Persimmon Imports; and Chris Waters, Chopsticks.

The festival is produced by The National Cherry Blossom Festival, Washington Waterfront Association and Hoffman-Madison Waterfront with participation of DMM.
