Apr 6, 2010: Spring is Flea Market Season

The snow has melted. Cherry blossoms bloom. Baseball season has begun. It's Spring in the Nations Capital, so get ready, get set to go to The Flea Market at Eastern Market to celebrate the seasons, 10 to 5 every Sunday at 7th and C Streets SE on Capitol Hill.
Free gift certificates are another reason to do so; as our blowout spring celebration gift certificate give away, announced in last month's newsletter, continues. You can win one of more than $1,100 in $25 gift certificates by clicking HERE, sending us an email headed "Free" and writing your name and mailing address as the message.
"And if you don't win one of these, you'll automatically get another chance to win $50 and $100 certificates, since we'll have a drawing for consolation prizes," promised Flea Market Manager Tom Rall.
"We started gift certificate donations to local community groups many years ago", Rall continued. "Then a few years back we did a give away to newsletter subscribers when we announced an onsite and online gift certificate sales program".
"While both promotions were popular, we discontinued them at the end of 2008 when the City took over management of the nonfood outdoor markets, including a large chunk of the flea market I developed the previous 25 years, on its property at Eastern Market," Rall said. "Since the City also owns the Hine School property across the street where we now continue to operate, and it is in the process of transferring to Stanton-Eastbanc, a local development group, we thought a final gift certificate give away would be a nice, perhaps last, gesture to our customers and exhibitors to say thank you for your support during our 27 years of management."
The gift certificates will have a December 31, 2010 expiration date, though "We look forward to work with either the City or the Stanton-Eastbanc development team going forward," Rall claimed.
Information on the Stanton-Eastbanc project can be found here.

The consolation prize drawings will be held in the music tent as our Music in the Yard series begins its second season on Sunday April 11 with the Andean Fusion sound of Mystic Warriors.

Groups and soloists will perform Noon to 1:30 p.m. and 2 to 3:30 p.m. sets every Sunday, weather permitting. For a complete schedule, which includes Rick Franklin, Dave Chappell, Ellen Cherry, Ian Walters and Dream Keepers performing an eclectic mix of Blues, Swing, Folk, and Rock through June 27, click on "Music in the Yard" at easternmarket.net.

Drawings will be held about 2:30 for the next four weeks, Rall said. "If you're eligible from an email entry, you won't have to be present to win; but we'll also allow attending customers to enter."

In addition to our favorite and famous prepared foods, Migue's Magnificiant Mini Donuts, Micha's Sorbet, Fruit Smoothies by the Pretzel Twist, and BiggPoppa Kettlecorn, three new businesses have been added to our Food at the Flea program, which was also initiated last year:
Bonjour La Parisienne Keith Rinaldi, an artisan baker, is dedicated to producing the freshest breads and sweet wholesome pastries. Virginia Bakery   Alexandra Rodriguez delivers freshly prepared empanadas, quesadillas, and other savory South-of-the Border dishes.
Le' Gourmet Funnel Cakes  J.C. Clark and family provide delicious gourmet funnel cakes with mouthwatering toppings and a selection of chai teas.
