Jun 29, 2013: Looking Ahead at The Flea Market

Continuation of the popular Flea Market at Eastern Market "Music in the Yard" series "through August" was announced today by Michael Berman, President of Diverse Markets Management (DMM), flea owner.

Berman said the decision to continue the series was due to "our optimism that the full area" where the flea market operates every Sunday outside the former Hine School, slated for redevelopment, "will be available, at least through August. Based on ongoing discussions with both the developer and city economic development office, at this time we feel it is likely the flea market will stay put for now."

It was previously announced in April that DMM had signed a license agreement with the City to begin some operations in August on part of 7th Street SE which would be closed adjacent to the development. "It now seems there will be no need to close the street for our use then," he said.
"A variety of lively local entertainment has been booked by Donna Fletcher, our DMM Music Coordinator," Berman continued. Performances are every Sunday between 12-3:30pm, weather permitting.

DMM also recently announced the availability of exhibitor applications for the 2013 Downtown Holiday Market.

Celebrating its ninth year, this event boasts one of the most spectacular outdoor shopping environments in the region.  This year the Downtown Holiday Market (DHM) will operate for 25 consecutive days. It will open Friday, November 29, and will run continuously through Monday, December 23 from Noon-8pm each day.

Held in the vibrant Penn Quarter neighborhood with the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture as its backdrop, the festival will again be located on the wide sidewalk of F Street, stretching from 7th to 9th Streets NW.

Co-produced by DMM and the Downtown DC Business Improvement District, the event has experienced tremendous growth in stature, sales numbers and customer attendance. DHM continues to be a juried, high-quality crafts and gift market featuring a diverse display from exhibitors of many types of merchandise, as well as prepared food and beverage vendors.

Applicants must complete an online application form before August 12. Information and application are available at DiverseMarkets.net.

Also available at the DMM web site and at the site BigChairMarket.com are applications and information for the Anacostia Big Chair Flea Market, which debuted Saturday, June 15, and will continue from 10-4 pm Saturdays in the large parking lot at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr Ave and Pleasant Streets SE.
Conceived and managed by DMM Director William (Rudy) Coates, an experienced assistant manager of The Flea Market at Eastern Market, the Anacostia market plans to feature a diverse mix of art, crafts, imports, antiques, collectibles and furniture. It will also accept local specialty food items such as fruits and vegetables, flowers, preserves, prepared foods and beverages.

The market boasts a prime location in the historic residential neighborhood on a major thoroughfare near the iconic "Big Chair" landmark.   Additionally, the market offers exhibitors a chance to vend their products to a new clientele.  "This allows new opportunities for people on our waiting lists at Eastern Market and for business incubations seeking entry-level rates " as fees are a third less than our Eastern Market flea rates.
