Aug 3, 2013: Business As Usual at The Flea Market

FLEA MARKET CONTINUES UNDER NEW AGREEMENT
The Flea Market at Eastern Market will operate as normal at least "until early spring 2014," according to an announcement recently by Michael Berman, President of Diverse Markets Management (DMM), manager of the popular Capitol Hill flea, Sundays at 7th & C Streets, SE.

The announcement was made in a July 20 letter to exhibitors, who had previously been bracing for the market to downsize this month. In April DMM signed a license agreement with the District of Columbia to continue the market operations on a closed Seventh Street SE, along a side of redevelopment planned for the site.

The two-year license incorporated a Mayor's Order for the street closure on weekends and a Public Space permit for the market operation on the closed street beginning August 1, 2013. "Now the effective date of that license has been extended until March 14, 2014," Berman said.

"The development proposed for the site has been challenged by certain neighbors and community groups. This appeal was rejected by the city's Zoning Commission but is now before the Circuit Court of DC and will be heard in September," Berman wrote. "This obviously delays the start of the project, even if the appeal were to be dismissed by the court.

"However, due to contractual obligations, the City has still conveyed oversight of the land to the developer, which means essentially we are no longer under a City contract, we are now a tenant of the developer. And we've sent our first rent check," he said.

"Both our exhibitors and customers are elated that we can plan on business as usual through the end of the year. And we'd like to thank both the City and the developer for working with us closely," he concluded.

TYSONS CORNER CENTER HOLIDAY MARKET ANNOUNCED
DMM late last month also announced an exciting new holiday event, the Tysons Corner Center Holiday Market. "This event will be a spectacular outdoor shopping experience inspired by the traditional German Christmas Markets," Berman wrote prospective exhibitors, "and will take place for 3 days during a prime shopping weekend. It will open Friday, December 13, and will run Saturday and Sunday, December 14 and 15."

Located at the famous Virginia mall directly in front of Panera Bread, Chipotle and Elevation Burger, the festival will be on the roadway between the parking garage and the main entrances to Nordstrom and the "Café Corridor." A stage, spectacular Christmas tree, entertainment, beer garden and other festive and engaging activity will support the intimate gift purchasing and fun shopping experience of the market for 30 vendor booths.

Berman said Tysons Corner Center and the German Embassy are both partners in the event and will provide additional sponsors.

"DMM is really excited about the opportunities of the Tysons partnership and look forward to even bigger and more expansive events there in the future," Berman said.

"We are also pleased to be offering exhibitors three great marketing opportunities this December," Berman said. "Besides our first year at Tysons Corner Center, we're celebrating our ninth season at The Downtown Holiday Market and 30th at The Flea Market at Eastern Market."

Applications for both Tysons Corner Center and Downtown Holiday markets can be made until August 19 and August 12, respectively, at the company website: DiverseMarkets.net

DMM SEEKING MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE
Because of its continued market management expansion success, the company also announced it is seeking a part-time management assistant and is also considering further development of a management intern program begun recently. Both would be paid positions. People with prior outdoor market experience are preferred. Interested parties should send an email indicating interest.
