Oct 26, 2013: Video Spotlights at The Flea Market

Hiring of Filmmaker Melissa Lesh to create a YouTube channel to promote The Flea Market at Eastern Market (FMEM) and other markets managed by Diverse Markets Management (DMM) was announced today by DMM President Michael Berman.

"We've been expanding our social media presence to support our slate of events," Berman said. "And we are very fortunate to land Melissa."

A recent graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Lesh was recruited by DMM Director Tom Rall, who "first met Melissa as a junior in April 2012 when she helped my son, Brady Rall, launch the Rams Community Bazaar, an outdoor market on the VCU campus in Richmond. After Brady graduated that May, Melissa continued to chair the event through her senior year.

"And she also initiated a successful fund-raising proposal to start R-Bazaar, an indoor market mixing elements of pop up stores and consignment shops, which is expected to open on the VCU campus yet this year," Rall continued. "She asked me to be an advisor on that project and we began to talk about the possibility of her doing an internship with DMM.

"Eventually we learned that besides earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking, one of her films was selected for screening in the 6th Imagine Science Film Festival in New York City. So we thought she'd be perfect for the YouTube project and we were right," Rall concluded.

Lesh began her work by filming short interviews with exhibitors at the popular Capitol Hill flea market last Sunday and will continue shooting tomorrow.

"We really believe it's the exhibitors who make our markets successful," Rall said. "We'll start by introducing vendors who will also sell at The Downtown Holiday Market and Tysons Corner Center Christmas Market and eventually ask Melissa to do some lengthier visits to exhibitor artist studios and stores. Please check out Melissa's wonderful work and subscribe to our DMM YouTube channel.

Katrina Ulrich, a regular FMEM exhibitor, has opened her first brick-and-mortar store at 3800 Howard Avenue 2nd Floor, Kensington, MD 20895. Located among Kensington's Antique Row, the outlet will be open Wednesdays thru Fridays, noon to 6. The retail outlet will also serve wholesalers and as a workshop for Red Persimmon, which will also be selling at both the Downtown and Tysons Center holiday markets. For more information on Katrina's endeavors, see her newsletter.

The buzz for the opening of the 9th annual Downtown Holiday Market, co-produced by DMM and the DowntownBID, has already begun in local media. "As always we expect great local media coverage of the holiday market, which kicks off on this year on 'Black Friday', our earliest opening ever, and runs through December 23rd on F St. NW between 7th & 9th Sts., NW," Berman said.

The NBC-4 website kicked off the coverage this week, here.
