Nov 24, 2008: Holiday Season at Eastern Market

WASHINGTON, DC (November 24, 2008)--The holiday season at Eastern Market will be scented by pine starting Friday as West Virginia Farm Entrepreneur Jesse Dunham once again opens his Christmas tree stand, as he has every year since 1985.

Dunham said he'll be there himself to greet the first customer when the stand opens on its 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekday schedule. "Frasier Fir trees have proven the most popular and we'll have them from four to fourteen feet tall," Dunham promised. Weekends the stand will be open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Christmas tree sales, managed by Dunham's son Russell and step son Daniel Barker during the week, are just part of the Dunham family business. Besides offering produce weekends throughout most of the year at Eastern Market and Saturdays at the Alexandria Farmers market, it also operates Dunham's Produce, a market at the I-81 Exit 243 for Harrisonburg, VA. "You can find us near the big windmills, which you can see from the interstate," said Dunham.

Also in preparation for the holidays, Eastern Market is being spruced up by new holiday decorations, "both indoors and out," according to Barry Margeson, Realty Program Specialist at the DC Office of Property Management, which helped spur the purchase of "garlands, wreathes and banners."

A revised schedule of holiday season days and hours for the East Hall, where the merchants continue to offer both their regular offerings and special savory goodies for the season, has been posted online.

And what better way to wrap up the eclectic, eccentric and exciting experience of a Sunday at The Flea Market at Eastern Market than to give it as a gift!

Downtown Holiday Market
If you can't make Eastern Market on a weekend to do your gift shopping, here are two more holiday markets, where many Eastern Market exhibitors will be participating: The Downtown Holiday Market and The Riverfront Holiday Market.

The downtown market will be open daily, Friday, December 5 through December 23 from Noon to 8:00 pm on the F Street sidewalk between 7th and 9th Streets, NW in front of the Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture. A festive atmosphere and live musical entertainment will accompany more than 50 local exhibitors and artisans selling a diverse array of goods and high-quality gift items, such as photography, jewelry, knits, paintings, cultural crafts, seasonal beverages, prepared foods and more.

The fourth annual market is produced by the Downtown BID in partnership with Diverse Markets Management (DMM) and promises to be a shopping experience unlike any other in the city. Downtown Holiday Market.

Riverfront Holiday Market
The first annual Riverfront Holiday Market will attempt to capture some of the magic of both the Downtown Holiday Market and Eastern Market during a three-day run 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 16 through Thursday, December 18 at New Jersey Avenue and M Street SE, just across the street from Navy Yard Metro.

DMM, a Flea Market at Eastern Market spin off, is partnering with Capitol Riverfront BID in the market, which will feature nine exhibitors specifically selected for the event. Capitol Riverfront BID
