Nov 26, 2013: Season's Brightlights at the Markets

Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and 26 days remain until Christmas; but if you plan to shop for presents, you can go to area outdoor markets managed by Diverse Markets Management (DMM) on a record 32 days during the period.

The action kicks off Friday at the Ninth Annual Downtown Holiday Market for 25 consecutive days; continues for four Sundays at The Flea Market at Eastern Market, which first opened on Sundays in December 1991; and includes a 3-day weekend, beginning Friday, December 13 at the First Annual Tysons Corner Center Christmas Market.

"People love these festive seasonal markets and we take great pride in producing them," said DMM President Michael Berman.

The Downtown Holiday Market is co produced by the Downtown Business Improvement District and is located for the 8th consecutive year on the broad sidewalk in front of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and American Museum of Art on F Street NW between 7th and 9th Streets NW. More than 50 exhibitors will offer their wares in the tented event Noon to 8 p.m. daily. The schedule, which rotates more than 150 total exhibitors into the show, can be found here.

The Flea Market at Eastern Market is located at 7th and C Streets SE on Capitol Hill across from the historic Eastern Market, which has offered holiday trimmings since 1873. About 100 exhibitors are expected each Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm.

In partnership with the German Embassy and the city of Dresden, Tysons Corner Center offers a unique outdoor artisan holiday market in a traditional German outdoor market setting replete with festive German fare, lively entertainment and Christmas atmosphere. DMM recruited 30 exhibitors for the event at the Virginia mall featuring more than 300 stores, located just off the Capital Beltway (I-495), exits 46A and 47A.

Both the Downtown and Tysons Corner venues will present live entertainment throughout the events. Berman lauded DMM Music Coordinator Donna Fletcher for "putting the program together Downtown.

"The music schedule, months in the making, is a tribute to the Herculean effort Fletcher orchestrates every year," Berman said. "The breadth of her diverse contacts in the music community is extraordinary." More information on the performances can be found here.

Berman also noted that "a highlight of the Tysons market will be a food and adult beverage tent managed by German brewer and mall tenant Gordon Biersch."

Since we announced the October hiring of film maker Melissa Lesh to document the exhibitors who are at the heart of our markets she has shot more than three dozen "exhibitor shorts" of Eastern Market sellers which are still being uploaded to our You Tube channel; to see our growing online community subscribe here.

Lesh will continue filming during the first week of the Downtown Holiday Market and hopes to complete two or three dozen more video portraits in the series before she leaves later this month for India where she hopes to make a movie for which she recently launched a Kickstarter campaign, here.

Meantime, local press continues to cover DMM doings. President Berman was featured in a lengthy interview on the important blog, elevationDC. He was quoted on the histories of both The Flea Market at Eastern Market and Downtown Holiday Market and also "the lure of the market place" and the future of place making in DC.
